Nicole Falkingham, 41, spent several hours in a wine bar before apparently being driven to the home of Kevin and Cathy Keith.
The couple found Mrs Falkingham’s body on the back seat of their black Vauxhall Insignia, which was parked on the driveway, the next morning.
Police said a post mortem examination suggested that she died from acute alcohol intoxication and hypothermia.
Mr and Mrs Keith, aged 48 and 49, who have three children, were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and the cultivation of cannabis after 100 marijuana plants were found in their detached home in Aigburth, Liverpool. Both were released on bail pending further inquiries, Merseyside Police said.
Mrs Falkingham, a former personal assistant, was married to Jonathan Falkingham, 50, the chief executive of Urban Splash, a Manchester-based renovation firm. The company recently posted pre-tax losses of £9.3 million and debts of £234.4 million. The couple, who began dating in 2003, lived in a £1 million former farmhouse in Liverpool but were reportedly estranged at the time of her death. Mr Falkingham, who has two children from previous relationships, was not available for comment yesterday.
